the social barometer of the made or at least a twist an turn

throw back thursday on a slightly warming saturday.
PG 13 yet more moderate than a Victoria secret catalog

contemporary art lecture remembered...i show the first image and it took 15 minutes before anyone identifies how offensive my choices were. the works themselves not offensive yet offensive when combined. of course the topic was the manifestation of art from a sense of other, real and perceived oppression. as an affluent over educated white female and their professor, i had to do  some permission granting to coax them into touching on the politically incorrect offense, not even politically, just a flat out offense. finally a small population of the 90 began speaking up.  all lead by one brave she-child with the guts to point out how the specific offense related to the cow...you know who you are! good job. yay. It was a good day... relationships help us see what otherwise might go unnoticed. it allows us to see other; to see ourselves with more clarity if we dare to listen and see little truths without the gloss over of habit. comparative analysis which we partake in all day long in navigating this chair or that, this route or that, this person or that, allows us also to see culturally shifts and sameness. art as a social barometer for me is a key interest except when i just get tripped up on its trinkethood, art as product. it bores me. art as a social barometer, a barometer of self and other, a barometer of social habits unmasked, NOW that is of interest.

so i throw together images that on the surface [formally or content] seem similar...and through comparative analysis we hunt to see more than if they stood alone.

your turn. hunt and have fun with it. feel free to harvest for your own discussions and consider the images not my own but google harvested shared for educational purposes only...

there are superficial relationships, plus your current cultural baggage you bring to the analysis, but in each pairing if you do some background research (even google skimming), the similarities and differences are deep and profound. for instance many of these pairs have years, decades, some centuries, bridging their making, others span oceans, gender, the real and the made, education, affluence, margin, medium, and method...i finally started learning my geography and world history through the analysis of art which made it living and breathing enough so it enthralled.

mentoring/teaching philosophy fleshing out

ha! ok. I think this is what I do in the academic environment and why I think it is important. I am intuitive so sometimes it is hard to unpack why I do what I do...but I do trust the heck out of many of my teaching/group impulses. i realize most don't publicly process their philosophies, but shoot, i publicly process my entire life (blogging since 2006) with only a few undisclosed thoughts and topics. it is my life practice; it is a form of transparency; it is a hope that my process might be useful for others and might make their own life's a smidge better or bring a slow small smile to their face.

Mania* of making, mania of the mind, are worth harvesting, expanding, directing and releasing. As artist educator within foundations, my role in this process is to facilitate a sensitivity to listening. I see this listening as rather all encompassing and enabling of an awareness of self, others, materialities, processes and practice, traditions, physical, social and historical contexts, passions, subject matter, methodologies, and so on. This kind of perceptiveness requires me to equip students with a capacity to dwell inside and alongside of things and thinking so that making becomes a reflection of their listening. Access to the rhythms that come from deep listening allows what might otherwise remain submerged and unseen to manifest in ways that become meaningful. I have taught in the sciences, faith and the arts—each a creative endeavor and fundamentally parallel in the need for this sensitivity to listening, connecting, and acting upon.

Deep listening, connecting and making actually requires a high degree of risk taking, openness to critical feedback, and exposure to failure. This artistic risky behavior and openness is cultivated through a series of communal and curricular factors.

Beginning in the very first studio, it is critical to build in forms of interaction that emotionally tether the students to one another and to their sense of belonging within the program. These connections are initially accelerated when classroom norms are disrupted through a series of non-graded tasks that bring the students into opinionated mini monologues (about the arts), extremely close physical proximity (via a small team task), team performance of task, and laughter followed with a large group critical dialogue exploring the discrepancies between team intent and viewer perception. These forms of connections, teams, tasks, and dialogues set the stage to implement a curriculum and work practice that peaks curiosity, promotes artistic risk taking, critical dialog, and physical engagement. This tethering creates a workspace for the individual to engage in active listening, connecting and acting (making).

Built into the scope and sequence of the curriculum are the practices of successful artistic habits of deep listening—research, idea development, capacity to harvest from personal passions, critical reflection and discourse, collaborative unpacking of discrepancies between intent and outcome, deconstruction and adaption of working processes, work ethic, time management, opportunities for multiple iterations of a single concept or materiality, attention to craftsmanship, and professional presentation of work. Traditional attention to design elements and principles and craft are attended to but in ways that supports and emphasizes the habits of perceptiveness.

These deep listening habits are not only the key to successful art careers but they are highly portable and will transfer to other potential job/life activities that the artist may embrace to support their artistic practice.

I believe this is simply an extension of my life philosophy (written 2008).

i know making, writing, mentoring and loving are part of who i am.
  1. MAKING allows me to discover things
    about my world and self that would
    otherwise remain submerged and unattainable;
    it brings me joy, dirt and laughter
  2. MENTORING (teaching) gets me outside of myself,
    teaches me, helps me unlearn what doesn't belong;
    it brings me delight and purpose
  3. WRITING connects me through silence to my self,
    God, the world and others; helps me remember
    who I am and am becoming and how i fit;
    it brings me faith; it reveals my wounds;
    it opens me
  4. LOVING fills my body and soul,
    it connects my fragments of being
    it gives me the desire to both give and receive;
    it strengthens me; it brings me hope.
when i neglect any of these, my life, who i am, limps. or when i get too focused on how to eat and forget to walk, i limp. to walk in my own skin and know joy, i must attend to making, writing, mentoring and loving and not overlook the details of eating but not focus on it either. and so now i must walk my path in my own skin, take steps toward eating*, and i must attend. it may take me a while to figure out how to do these things, but i will.

*eating refers to the daily details of things i need to do in order to have food, shelter and such.

also relating to my unpacking and doing/understanding life

ha. my teaching philosophy as sound bites

  1. deconstructing discrepancies between artist intent and viewers perception
  2. disrupting habits--disrupt habits of mind, habits of making, habits of process, habits of materiality
  3. disrupting assumptions—perceived cultural, historical and personal narratives
  4. enticing to enter the ongoing dialog of contemporary art and practice
  5. digging into ideation process through guided research
  6. unpacking ideation and making processes
  7. tethering* for increased capacity for risk taking—materiality, methodology, conceptually
  8. exploiting pocket technology—smart phones and social media
  9. synthesizing and documenting (writing) deconstruction of habits, intent vs perception, processes
  10. collaboratively participate in critical reflection and feedback throughout process
  11. open capacities for listening (responsiveness and adaptability) to materials, methods, ideations, context
  12. connecting to contexts—physical, historical, psychological, cultural, personal
  13. exposing and explore the multiplicity of source of ideation for generation of work
  14. translating concept from one form to another—metaphorical, sensory translations, etc
  15. making space for the unruly, the resistant and the radical
  16. rewriting our histories our stories to understand and navigate the now
  17. skin on or off—life starts now; not later—artist/designer/animator
  18. work is art, not “project.” Hang all crits as an exhibition
  19. *peer community in which student experiences a strong sense of belonging.

sensory translations music > movement > mark > mood

One of my student's sensory translation in motion, in process
in studio we translate the aural to physical; my WASH coworker is presenting the reverse (artist marks translate to sound by musicians) jumping off this WASH exercise. i recently listened to a writing podcast from the Iowa writing school in which the professor presented a sound piece in which the writers translated into language. As poets oft remind us of how the everyday experience that we've grown accustom to may be reawakened by presenting one sensation through the language of an alternate sense.additionally these exercises are to explore and break the habits of usage of marking devices generated from years of handwriting.

Upon completion of her MFA in Graphic Communication from the University of Houston, Kathryn transitioned from the two-dimensional realm into being a maker of objects and space. Drawn to the symbolic and formal elements of urban decay and the weightiness of cast off human discards that resonate with the experiences of living, she harvests from the urban waste stream.  She collects, cogitates, and distills. Eventually the formal and symbolic elements of the materials, research and writings merge. From there she moves into making, assembling, sewing, revaluing these materials, moving from spectation into production, not mechanized but sensualized by the hand. The sculptural constructs become a stand in for the shadow self. Concurrent with her making, writing and exhibiting, functioning in the role of Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Foundations, Kathryn passionately teaches and mentors in a unique conceptually driven program, one of a kind in the state of Texas, at Sam Houston State University—WASH [Workshop in Art Studio + History].

coloring between the lines has not been a functional advantage

in exploring cultural production or in art foundations for as long as i can remember (ok well that is not all that long) except within environments that primarily emphasize compliance, though I do recommend driving between the lines (compliance in this case is about survival).

the lines should be recognized, understood in terms of their function, even used as needed, but futures lay at and over these edges, in the borderlands of production.

"an ongoing attempt to get the students to learn from each other, to decenter the power in the classroom (studio), to challenge disciplinary borders, to create a borderland where new hybridized identities might emerge, to take up in a problematic way the relationship between language and experience, and to appropriate knowledge as part of a broader effort at self-definition and ethical responsibility. border writing (production--art) in this case became a type of hybridized, border literacy, a form of cultural production and pedagogical practice where otherness becomes comprehensible, collective memory rewrites the narratives of insurgent social movements, and students travel between diverse theoretical and cultural zones of difference, and in doing so, generate a space where new intersections between identity and culture emerge." -- giroux's border practice

"while the anti disciplinary actively challenges the taxonomic effort to organize, categorize, and delimit knowledge into discrete, sanctioned modes of inquiry, the post-disciplinary (trans) functions as if those discrete modes no longer matter."

the emerging trend in art foundations is trans-disciplinary--facilitating process, thinking, collaborating, and meaning making with intent to explore the borderlands of cultural production. what are the implications for what is happening in the studio environment of academia?

just reading and thinking and naturally reading texts that feed my own paradigm. human nature.

it may be the gin talking but...

though I have actually loved every class I have had, I am especially partial to the two crews I have this semester. I don't know if it is because I am more awake in terms of post post blinding divorce trauma or that they simply happen to be an amazing crew set. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and go with...they are just a great set. the two crews are so strong, I really am not overly bothered (overwhelmed) by the crazy amount of grading it requires. and i love the synergy that manifests from a stupid high number of studio emerging artists, designers and animatirs. amazingly enough I am only behind on one project for only one section. though it is time to catch up with this project (as it is one of my favs I've developed) or I am going to get my grading butt kicked as we roll in to the final weeks. I am especially partial to my two wash pods this semester (no offense to my previous washers).

they told a story and then gave me some line
mark making project produced by my students

from this to all this [storyline project -- story + artifact]
see album for more of their work
go to program blog to see more project handouts
feel free to use and adapt. just don't claim them as your own :)

students spend or save as much money as their creative powers allow
ie above piece is made from chicken wire and tape
below required a bit more cashola
